This is the second title in the textbook series I’m creating for the National Council for Geographic Education. This title deals with AP Human Geography, a college-level course introducing students to the systematic study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alteration of our planet’s surface. Students employ spatial concepts and landscape analyses to analyze human social organization and its environmental consequences. They also learn about the methods and tools geographers use in their science and practice.
Several lessons covered dealt with environmental impact, so I decided to draw my inspiration from the earth itself. A majority of the lessons in this book were African based, so I researched the soil colors in the main regions the book dealt with and pulled my color palette from directly from nature. The “stripe” element on this title had to be more abstract. So I created a visualization of the author’s process overlaying the keywords on arrows flowing to the silhouettes, which represent the students.
I am currently contracted to create seven more titles in this series for NCGE and will share them as they are published so you can see the full arc of designs.
